Animal Compatibility Guide
Traditional Chinese astrology groups the 12 animals into four trine (三合) groups of natural harmony. Animals within the same trine support each other. Animals directly opposite (six apart) face the most friction.

The Five Elements
Each pair of consecutive years shares an element, cycling through all five to complete the 60-year sexagenary cycle. The last digit of your birth year determines your element.
How the Calculation Works
Animal Formula
The 12 animals cycle starting from the Rat. The standard calculation: (year − 4) mod 12 gives a number 0–11 mapping to Rat through Pig.
Example: 1990 → (1990 − 4) = 1986 → 1986 mod 12 = 6 → index 6 = Horse ✓
Element Formula
The element is determined by the last digit of the year: 0–1 = Metal, 2–3 = Water, 4–5 = Wood, 6–7 = Fire, 8–9 = Earth. This creates the two-year element cycles.
Example: 1990 → last digit 0 → Metal Horse ✓. 2000 → last digit 0 → Metal Dragon ✓. 2024 → last digit 4 → Wood Dragon ✓
⚠️ Lunar New Year Boundary (Critical)
The Chinese zodiac year begins on Lunar New Year, not January 1. Lunar New Year falls between January 21 and February 20 of the Gregorian calendar, on a different date each year.
If you were born in January or early February: your zodiac sign may belong to the previous calendar year. For example, someone born on January 15, 1990 (before Lunar New Year 1990) would have the same animal as people born in 1989.
The 60-Year Sexagenary Cycle
Combining 12 animals × 5 elements = 60 unique year types before any combination repeats. This 60-year cycle (甲子 gānzhī) is one of the oldest continuous calendar systems in the world, used alongside the Gregorian calendar for cultural and astrological purposes.
